Still my favorite

Same as last year, Abraham Lincoln gets my vote as my favorite President in United States history. I only mention this becasue today is the 198th anniversary of Lincoln's birthday.

And unless something within me changes, old Honest Abe will still be my favorite historical figure in United States history next year and the year after and the year after that, etc., etc, etc.

The man was, quite frankly, a brilliant, yet humble God fearing man. What he had to deal with on a daily basis during his Presidency would make a lesser man crack. What he had to deal with in his private, family life would drive most people mad.

I can only imagine how American History would have been different, if Mr. Lincoln had lived beyond the ripe old age of 56.

If only....

Yes, and of course honest Abe shares a birthday with your favourite British scientist:

Charles Darwin

Happy 198th Chuck!

Abe Lincoln was a scumbag and, no, I'm not joking or writing that for shock value. If you read a non-glowing take of his presidency, you find out he was barely different from the rest of the bastards involved in the un-Civil War.

Nothing he did was out of some altruistic belief in goodness and morality.

scribe: i respectfully disagree. I've read not only a few biographies of Lincoln but almost everything he wrote before and during his Presidency and I see nothing that would classify him in the "scumbag" category of Presidents.

Sure, he wasn't a perfect President (who is?), and by modern standards he would be classified as a racist. I'd argue that he thought the white man was better than the black man but he didn't think that any man should be owned by another man.

Wow, Scribe doesn't like Abe.
Why does that amaze me?

green,

Lincoln was a no-good opportunist with absolutely no moral core. He was flip-flopper and had no interest in freeing slaves. In fact, he refused to meet with Frederick DOuglas, his intelelctual superior in every conceivable way, until it became unavoidable. The fact that he is revered is one of the greatest whitewashes in U.S. History.
