To Kill an American

My grandmother forwarded this to my email:

You probably missed it in the rush of news last week, but there was actually a report that someone in Pakistan had published in a newspaper an offer of a reward to anyone who killed an American, any American.

So an Australian dentist wrote the following to let everyone know what an American is, so they would know when they found one.

An American is English, French, Italian, Irish, German, Spanish, Polish, Russian or Greek.

An American may also be Canadian, Mexican, African, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Australian, Iranian, Asian, Arab, Pakistani, or Afghan.

An American may also be a Comanche, Cherokee, Osage, Blackfoot, Navaho, Apache, Seminole or one of the many other tribes known as native Americans.

An American is Christian, or he could be Jewish, Buddhist, or Muslim.

In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.

An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.

An American lives in the most prosperous land in the history of the world. The root of that prosperity can be found in the Declaration of Independence, which recognizes the God given right of each person to the pursuit of happiness.

An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.

When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!

As of the morning of September 11, Americans had given more than any other nation to the poor in Afghanistan.

Americans welcome the best of everything - the best products, the best books, the best music, the best food, the best services. But they also welcome the least.

The national symbol of America, The Statue of Liberty, welcomes your tired and your poor, the wretched refuse of your teeming shores, the homeless, tempest tossed. These in fact are the people who built America.

Some of them were working in the Twin Towers the morning of September 11, 2001 earning a better life for their families. It's been told that the World Trade Center victims were from at least 30 different countries, cultures, and first languages, including those that aided and abetted the terrorists.

So you can try to kill an American if you must.

Hitler did.

So did General Tojo, and Stalin, and Mao Tse-Tung, and other blood-thirsty tyrants in the world.

But, in doing so you would just be killing yourself. Because Americans are not a particular people from a particular place. They are the embodiment of the human spirit of freedom. Everyone who holds to that spirit, everywhere, is an American.

God Bless America!

I'm sorry, but that was really funny to me. I see you and my girlfriend's family would get along famously.

I'm not sure whether to be insulted by that or be complimented by it.

I'd probably guess insulted would be what you were aiming for considering the high opinion you have of her & her family...

It wasn't intended as one, but it brought back lovely flashbacks of Thanksgiving :)

“My grandmother forwarded this to my email:”

First off, 95% of things like this forwarded on to you are either way out of context or complete fabrications. This is especially true of the various chain emails that start with something like “why isn’t the media reporting this?!?”

“In fact, there are more Muslims in America than in Afghanistan. The only difference is that in America they are free to worship as each of them chooses.”

Sure they are. Unless of course Alberto Gonzales decides that them exercising their right to religious observance is actually a front for a terrorist group, in which case he’ll have them locked up and tortured.

“An American is also free to believe in no religion. For that he will answer only to God, not to the government, or to armed thugs claiming to speak for the government and for God.”

Except that I have been held to answer for my lack of belief by the government and those who claim to speak for them. You know the old canard about anybody being able to grow up and become president? They really should slap am ‘atheists need not apply’ sticker on that. I’m completely unelectable to any meaningful office for which I would choose to run because of my non belief – thus denying me the opportunity to participate in our alleged democracy to the same extent as others.

“An American is generous. Americans have helped out just about every other nation in the world in their time of need, never asking a thing in return.”

We’ve also, of course helped out lots of nasties including Augusto Pinochet and um... Saddam Hussein. (And of course, we ALWAYS ask for something in return – just not explicitly)

“When Afghanistan was over-run by the Soviet army 20 years ago, Americans came with arms and supplies to enable the people to win back their country!”

No, we came in with arms and supplies (which we gave to our good friends of the time – the Taliban) because we were fighting a cold war with USSR (or have we forgotten this part of our history).

I feel the need to step in here, on behalf of America. We help COUNTLESS countries all over the world. Food, money, medicines, etc. When Good ol' USA has problems, who helps us? NO ONE. When the terrorist attack leveled the twin towers, I don't recall seeing a bit of aid from any other country. All the hurricanes hitting this year, did anyone offer financial aid or food, other than in this country? Not that I am aware of.
As for our great democracy, the people of this century like to forget what it was founded upon. Religious freedom, yes. Freedom from oppression, yes. BUT we all forget GOD. He is in the Constition. He is even imprinted on your money. You can disbelieve if you like, it's your right, but this country was founded with GOD playing a major role in the process.

Oh, it must be nice to live in your own little bubble not having to pay attention to the real world.

"When the terrorist attack leveled the twin towers, I don't recall seeing a bit of aid from any other country." Actually, as i recall we had just about the whole world on our side for a while. NATO even invoked Article 5 (I think that's what it is called) for the first time in its history, under the doctrine that an attack on one member oif the alliance would be seen as an attack on all. We had this near universal support until a certain boy king squandered it.

"All the hurricanes hitting this year, did anyone offer financial aid or food, other than in this country? Not that I am aware of."

No? If you honestly belive this i can only assume that you must have been in one of the areas affected, thereby cutting off all communication with the outside world. Because if you had seen as much as a TV screen or a newspaper, you would know that offers were pouring in from everywhere. The EU offered food aid. Mexico put its army at our disposal for relief operations. Even Cuba offered to help - CUBA!

I guess I live in a bubble at times. However, the fact that NATO invoked whatever clause didn't pour money into the American economy or help those affected by the devastation. THAT is what we as Americans do. Perhaps we need to "invoke verbal sympathy" with all the countries we supply money and food to, and take care of our own!
Mea Culpa, I did not see that anyone offered food to our people in the hurricane areas.
I see you skipped over my points about this country being founded on FAITH IN GOD, American, that I find interesting.

dabich: AG will tend to do that - ignore, to a degree, conversations about God.

Trust me, I've been down that road with him and quite frankly, it's sad that a person of AG's intelligence can't see the forest for the trees where God is concerned.

He'd probably tell you that God is a figment of your imagination or that intelligent people don't believe in God or evolution proves God doesn't exist or that "serious scientists" don't believe in God either or some other such nonsense.

But with all heathens, we just have to pray that someday they'll understand & take seriously what God is all about, HOPEFULLY before it's too late (e.g. when he becomes "worm food" or a cadaver on a medical student's table.)

Green~I agree, and you know, I WILL pray for him to come to the conclusion that God does indeed exist. It's funny tho, until my divorce 4 years ago, I was a staunch Roman Catholic. Going thru some of the chit I did, really opened my eyes a lot. BUT...I do still believe in God, and no one can take that from me. man made rules won't rob me of my belief.
On a lighter note, I was trying to get AG's goat, but he's ignoring me LOL!!
